The Behind Cycle
Stops kids from being behind, falling behind and staying behind
Did you know that globally, 66% of children are not reading at their expected grade level? When a child cannot read proficiently, they fall further and further behind their peers. This gap only widens as time goes on, affecting not only their academic success but also their confidence and future opportunities.

Hello!
I’m Jo Ann
The Behind Cycle program by Jo Ann Gramlich, speech therapist and award-winning author of Talk, Play, and Read, aims to break this cycle by creating a strong foundation of language and literacy skills. Starting from birth, it’s crucial to engage your child in activities that stimulate their senses—seeing, hearing, tracking objects, and more. These developmental phases set the stage for lifelong learning.
Why Early Communication Matters
From day one, communicating with your child is key. Talk, play, and read with them at every stage of their development to nurture their growing mind. By building these essential skills early, we can close the gap and ensure no child falls behind.
Support The Behind Cycle. Help Children & Their Families Thrive.
Our goal is to empower children with the skills they need for academic excellence and inspire them to reach their fullest potential. Through this donatable program, we offer support to families and communities, helping children catch up and thrive.
What is the Behind Cycle?
Simply put, the “Behind Cycle” is “Being behind, falling behind, and staying behind.” Fundamentally, “The Behind Cycle” is when a child is not reading at their proficient literacy level. The main goal is stopping the cycle so children are no longer behind. We want to reverse the cycle so children can read and achieve academic success.
Who does the Behind Cycle affect?
The Behind Cycle affects children who are not reading at their expected grade or age. They are not reading at their proficient reading level and unable to keep up with educational demands.
What connection does the Behind Cycle have with Early Intervention and young children?
In early intervention, it’s crucial to understand the deep connection between language development, reading, and academic success. We need to support and encourage those who may not fully grasp the significance of this connection. It’s important to remember that a student’s ability to read by third grade can greatly impact their future success. Let’s work together to ensure that every child has the opportunity to flourish because reading is fundamental.
What can happen when a child falls behind academically?
If a child falls behind academically, they lose the ability to speak up for themselves, struggle to understand new concepts, demonstrate low self-esteem, have decreased confidence in their abilities, feel isolated, disrupt school and home life, and have difficulty keeping up with their peers. These are just a few examples of what can happen when a child falls behind.
What can happen when a child learns how to read, excels in school, and is no longer part of the Behind Cycle?
If a child learns how to read, everything changes. Reading helps children develop their vocabulary and language skills. It allows children to feel emotionally whole and make behaviorally mature decisions, encourages community involvement and connections, and allows for greater high school graduation rates. The ability to read unlocks potential, activates dreams, and opens the doors for endless possibilities.
