Rainy days will allow you and your child to experience the world using each of your senses. You and your toddler might see a rainbow or hear the loud sounds of thunder. Together you can hold up an umbrella and splash in the puddles. Whatever it maybe, you and your child can discover so many fun things to do on a rainy day. You might even create some rainy day foods to taste!
Here is a list of fun activities for toddlers to keep them entertained and educated during rainy days.
- Fruit Rainbow
The fruit rainbow is a great way to bring some color to a gray day. Any kid or even a grown-up will definitely
find this easy-to-make edible art enjoyable! All you need to prepare is Greek yogurt for the clouds, colorful fruits that will resemble a rainbow, (e.g. strawberries for the red, Mandarin oranges and carrots for the orange, pineapple
for the yellow, kiwi and spinach leaves for the green, and blueberries for the blue/indigo/violet) and chopped cheese sticks for a pot of gold. Talk about rainbows and how they are made while your toddler eats. This is a cool way to educate your child
about this magnificent natural phenomenon.
- Indoor Camping
Building a tent made of a blanket is a cozy form of camping during rainy days without going outside your house.
Roasting some s’mores and telling a few good stories will add a finishing touch to your indoor camping adventure. Just prepare a large cloth; comfortable accessories like sleeping bags, pillows, and stuffed animals; and heavy items
to anchor your tent.
- Prism Rainbows
This is one of the simplest activities you can show to your kids and it will perk them up as the rainbow appears from a prism. If you don’t have a prism, a clear glass cup of water about ¾ full will do. All you have to do is find a sunny spot, place the
glass in front of it, and aim towards a white paper. You will see a rainbow!
- Cloud Parfaits
Another delicious and colorful approach to enjoying rainy days is creating cloud parfaits. The colorful ingredients of this sumptuous dessert mimics the sky outside. The recipe for creating cloud parfaits includes mixing the cool whip, blue Jello,
and cold water together. Different layers of blue Jello and cool whip are arranged to make this dessert appear like clouds in your own very glasses.
- Window Markers
You don’t have to worry about window markers since they are easy to clean up. Stimulate your child’s imagination by letting him draw objects or scribble on your windows using the markers. After he’s done, you can simply wipe away the sketches and scribbles using a wet cloth.
- Rain Art
Getting creative with kids can be so much fun! Kids love to draw and color. All you need are washable markers and watercolor paper or a heavyweight cardstock that can withstand the rain. After your chilld has dranw his picture, put his wonderful work of art out in the rain and watch what happens. The rain creates spots of blots on the colors that look like the result of an oil painting. See it for yourself the next time it rains!
These are just a few of the many rainy day activities that you and your child can enjoy together. Make sure to expand and add new information onto your toddler’s utterances or simple sentences. You can also use colorful vocabulary words to express and describe what your toddler is doing during each of the fun and creative activities.
