What is the Behind Cycle?

Fundamentally, the ‘Behind Cycle’ refers to when a child is not reading at their expected literacy level and struggles to keep up with educational demands. The main goal is to stop the cycle so that children are no longer behind. Simply put, the ‘Behind Cycle’ is “being behind, falling behind, and staying behind.” We want to reverse the cycle so children can read and achieve academic success.

Who does the Behind Cycle affect?

The Behind Cycle affects children who are not reading at their expected grade or age. They are not reading at their proficient reading level and unable to keep up with educational demands.

What connection does the Behind Cycle have with Early Intervention and young children?

In early intervention, it’s crucial to understand the deep connection between language development, reading, and academic success. We need to support and encourage those who may not fully grasp the significance of this connection. It’s important to remember that a student’s ability to read by third grade can greatly impact their future success. Let’s work together to ensure that every child has the opportunity to flourish because reading is fundamental.

What can happen when a child falls behind academically?

If a child falls behind academically, they lose the ability to speak up for themselves, struggle to understand new concepts, demonstrate low self-esteem, have decreased confidence in their abilities, feel isolated, disrupt school and home life, and have difficulty keeping up with their peers. These are just a few examples of what can happen when a child falls behind.

What can happen when a child learns how to read, excels in school, and is no longer part of the Behind Cycle?

If a child learns how to read, everything changes. Reading helps children develop their vocabulary and language skills. It allows children to feel emotionally whole and make behaviorally mature decisions, encourages community involvement and connections, and allows for greater high school graduation rates. The ability to read unlocks potential, activates dreams, and opens the doors for endless possibilities.
